Background
Personal Life
I grew up living a pretty middle class life. It was great. I was born in Calgary, Alberta and later moved to Oregon in 1992. I was fortunate to have been able to travel the world as a child. I was old enough to remember most of these vacations.
The vacation that really opened my eyes as a youngster was a trip to the Philippines. Up until that point, all I knew was a privilaged life. This changed when I flew half a world away to a third world country.
I didn’t have a concept of hardship until then. I witnessed sewage canals and gutters. Toddlers with no shoes. I realized that in North America, even the poor aren’t poor. We have access to soup kitchens and shelters.
In the Philippines, if you’re poor you have nothing. Nothing but your faith.
The reason why I’m telling you about this is because life experiences can impact your mindset and how you approach every situation. I experienced something that a lot of people don’t even have a concept of.
This motivates me to strive for success in life so that I can give back. Its time for me to give back. I learned so much about opportunity over my life, that I want to share these principles with you.
Business
I spent the nearly all of 2008 and the early part of 2009 studying to become a Certified Public Accountant. This was grueling experience for me. I worked 40 hours a week at my j.o.b. and studied for 35 hrs a week on top of that.
The best analogy that I have for how hard this was is a college final. Imagine your toughest test that you’ve ever taken. Multiply that by 10.
Once of you’ve done that, imagine the amount of time you would have to spend studying to pass that. Then do that every week for a year straight. Literally.
The only reason that I was prepared for that was because I used to be a door to door salesman. I worked 80 hours a week. This was the hardest thing I had ever done.
Until the CPA exam. But it prepared me for the adversity that I would face. It taught me how to be positive and how attitude can make or break you.
Being out in the world on your own will make you realize that you need purpose. That you need goals. Small attainable goals, that eventually get you to your big goals.
I learned that it is ok to fail, but it is not ok to quit. This is because a success always disguises all of the failures along the way. These principles are what it takes to do anything you want in business.
Where I am Today
I characterize myself as a successful, goal oriented individual that loves life. Someone who’s willing to do what it takes to make their dreams come true.
A person that’s willing and ready to share this mentality with those that want be influenced by it and who are willing to be coached and taught.
We can all talk about wanting and needing. But there’s a saying that says, “people are not defined by their words, but by their actions.” I’m taking action. Everyday.
